This weekend I have been watching the news on TV about The Queen’s birthday celebration. The Queen was born in April but her official birthday is celebrated in June. Why is this? Britain is infamous for its weather particularly in spring when it can be very unreliable. So June was chosen when there is a better likelihood of good weather for official celebrations. This tradition is thought to have started by King George II over 200 years ago.

This year marks The Queen’s 90th birthday so a massive street party was held on the Mall outside Buckingham Palace for 10000 people. The Queen is patron of more than 600 odd charities so they were granted priority access to the tickets, followed by a public ballot for the remaining. However, don’t expect this to be a free lunch! The tickets cost £150 per head (USD210) !

Every year the part of the celebration that I most look forward to is the fly past by the RAF Red Arrows. Their agility and precision in the aerobic displays during the few seconds that they fly by, is definitely one of the most amazing performance to be seen.
